Design agency Wavespace released a framework for AI agent interfaces citing industry forecasts that by the end of 2026, approximately 40% of enterprise applications will include task-specific AI agents - up from less than 5% in 2025. The framework argues that the shift from general-purpose chatbots to task-specific agents requires a fundamentally different design approach: visible agent reasoning, explicit trust cues, human approval checkpoints, and task-specific interfaces rather than generic chat replies.
The governance implication is significant. A task-specific agent embedded in an enterprise application is making decisions and taking actions - not just generating responses. The audit trail, the decision boundary, and the failure mode of that agent are architectural requirements, not configuration options.
The jump from 5% to 40% in one year is the fastest adoption curve in enterprise software history for a single capability category. The organizations building appropriate governance around task-specific agents now are positioned to deploy them credibly. The organizations treating agent deployment as a product rollout rather than an architectural decision are accumulating liability.
